With the right preparation and a good plan, you can set up a complete container pond in one weekend, complete with substrate, plants and hardscape. This walkthrough takes you step by step from an empty tub to a living biotope where your medakas will soon be able to swim.

This layer not only serves as a breeding ground for your aquatic plants, but also as a home for beneficial bacteria that will later play a key role in the pond's development. Step 3: Apply hardscape And Planting

With a clean container and a good substrate as a basis, it is time for the creative phase: applying hardscape elements and plants. Hardscape refers to the non-living decorative elements such as stones, wood and ceramic structures that give your pond structure and visual depth. Preferably choose natural materials such as slate, lava stone or pieces of driftwood that have been specially treated for aquatic use. Place these elements strategically so that they create hiding places for your medakas, but also make sure to leave plenty of open swimming space. This step takes an average of 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how detailed you want to shape the landscape.

After installing the hardscape, you continue with the planting, which is perhaps the most time-consuming part of the entire project. Choose a mix of floating plants such as duckweed or water hyacinth, submerged plants such as hornwort, and marsh plants that can grow with their roots in the substrate, such as water lilies or cattails. A varied planting is not only aesthetically attractive, but also contributes to water quality because plants absorb nitrates and phosphates. Step 4: Carefully Fill the Container Pond

Now that your pond has been provided with substrate, hardscape and plants, the time has come to add water. This sounds simple, but there are some important points to consider to prevent damage to your carefully constructed layers. Preferably use a large saucer or plastic plate that you place on the bottom and carefully pour the water over it. This technique prevents the water jet from swirling up your substrate layer and uprooting your plants. Fill the pond in stages, at 10 to 15 minute intervals, so that the water can settle quietly and you can check whether everything stays in place.

For a 60 liter pond, the entire filling process usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on your water supply and the care you take. It is important to use tap water that has been allowed to degas for at least 24 hours, or to use a water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine and chloramine. These substances are harmful to the useful bacteria that you will need later during the application process. After filling, check the water temperature and make sure it is around 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, which is the ideal range for starting biological processes in your new biotope.

Step 5: Turn In, Give Your pond Time

The final and perhaps most important step in the entire process is turning, or cycling, your container pond. This process involves building a colony of beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrite and then into the less harmful nitrate. Without these bacteria, fish introduced too early would be exposed to toxic levels of ammonia, which can lead to serious health problems or even death. Setting up a pond of this size usually takes between 3 and 6 weeks, depending on water temperature, the amount of plants and whether you use starter bacteria from a bottle.

During this period, patience is your most important ally. Test the water weekly with a reliable test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. You will see ammonia levels peak in the first two weeks, followed by a rise in nitrite around week three to four. Only when both values ​​have dropped to zero again and a stable nitrate value is measurable, is your pond ready to receive medakas. Many experienced aquascapers recommend adding a small amount of fish food during this stage to start the process naturally, as the breakdown of food produces ammonia that the bacteria need to multiply.
