How do you recognise a sick Medaka ricefish?
A Medaka's behaviour often says more than a thousand words. A healthy Medaka is active, swims lively through the aquarium and shows interest in its surroundings and its food. When a fish withdraws, hangs apathetically in a corner or floats at the surface without moving, that is a clear alarm signal. Also be alert if a Medaka suddenly loses interest in food when it normally eats eagerly. Physical changes are also important indicators of your Medaka's health. Watch for changes in colour: a healthy Medaka has clear, vivid colours. Pallor, dark spots or a grey haze can point to disease. Look at the fins too: are they clamped, torn or frayed? Check the body for swellings, white spots, slime layers or other abnormalities that are not normally there. A Medaka's breathing also tells you a lot about its welfare. Healthy ricefish breathe calmly and regularly. If a fish breathes quickly, gasps at the water surface or moves its gills irregularly, this can indicate oxygen shortage, water quality problems or an infection. Remember that early detection is crucial: the sooner you intervene, the greater the chance of recovery.
Common diseases in Medaka
Fungal infections are among the most common problems in Medaka, especially after injuries or in aquaria with poor water quality. You recognise a fungal infection by white, cottony tufts on the body, the fins or the mouth of your fish. These fungi are often secondary infections that develop when the skin is damaged. Treatment consists of improving water quality and adding an antifungal agent to the water. Salt can also help: a salt bath of 0.3-0.5% for 10-15 minutes can work wonders.White spot disease (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, also called "Ich") is a parasitic infection that shows up as small white dots on the body and fins, as if your fish had been sprinkled with salt. Affected Medaka often rub against objects in the aquarium and show skittish behaviour. This disease is highly contagious and spreads quickly through the whole aquarium. Treatment requires raising the water temperature to 28-30°C (if your other fish can tolerate this) and using a specific medicine against white spot. It is important to complete the treatment, even when the spots seem to have gone, because the parasite has several life stages.Fin rot and tail rot are bacterial infections that often develop from poor water quality, overpopulation or stress. You see the edges of the fins turn white or red and begin to fray or rot away. In serious cases the infection can spread to the body. The best approach is prevention by maintaining excellent water quality, but if your fish are already affected, act quickly. Do a large water change (50-75%), improve filtration and use an antibacterial agent. Quarantining affected fish prevents spread to healthy specimens. Recognising and treating diseases in Medaka does not have to be complicated if you know what to look for. The key to success lies in observation and prevention: keep your aquarium clean, maintain good water quality and watch your fish's behaviour every day. Medaka are naturally hardy and resilient fish, and with proper care they usually stay healthy. Should something still go wrong, the knowledge in this article lets you intervene quickly and properly. Remember that for serious or unknown diseases, a veterinarian specialised in fish can always offer the best help. Enjoy your healthy Medaka!
