Medaka or Goldfish?

A comparison for pond enthusiasts

If you are looking for the perfect fish for your pond, you will soon come across two popular species: the medaka (Japanese rice fish) and the classic goldfish. Both fish have their own charm and unique qualities, but which one suits your situation best? In this article we look at the main differences between these two remarkable pond fish. Whether you are a seasoned medaka enthusiast or still undecided between the two, after reading this article you will know exactly where you stand.

Medaka vs goldfish: what are the differences?

Size and appearanceThe most striking difference between medaka and goldfish is their size. An adult medaka grows only 3 to 4 centimetres long, while a goldfish can easily reach 15 to 30 centimetres, depending on the variety. This compact size makes medaka ideal for smaller ponds and even large aquaria. In appearance, goldfish are of course iconic with their glossy orange, red or white colours, but medaka certainly do not fall behind. Medaka come in beautiful varieties such as black-and-white (panda), metallic blue, and the popular orange-red shades.Lifespan and temperature toleranceA healthy goldfish can live 10 to 20 years with good care, and some individuals even longer. Medaka have a shorter life expectancy of roughly 2 to 4 years, although under optimal conditions they can also live longer. As far as temperature goes, both species are surprisingly hardy in winter. Goldfish are known for their ability to survive under ice, provided the pond is deep enough. Medaka, however, are true champions of temperature tolerance: they can survive in water from 2°C up to as much as 40°C! This makes them particularly well suited to the Dutch climate, in both harsh winters and warm summers.Behaviour and social structureGoldfish are social animals that like to swim in groups and search the bottom for food. However, they can become territorial during the spawning season and tend to eat or uproot plants. Medaka, by contrast, are peaceful shoaling fish that are constantly on the move and like to swim near the water surface. Their swimming is lively and playful, which makes them fascinating to watch. An important difference is that medaka are far less destructive to aquatic plants than goldfish, so your pond keeps a more natural look. Medaka are also excellent eaters of mosquito larvae, which makes them extra useful for your pond!

Which fish suits your pond best?

Pond size and capacityThe size of your pond is probably the most important factor when choosing between medaka and goldfish. Goldfish need at least 1000 litres of water, with roughly 200-300 litres per fish to keep them healthy. A too small pond leads to stress-prone, unhealthy fish and water problems. Medaka are much more flexible: you can start with a small pond of 100-200 litres, and even smaller volumes can suit a small group. This makes medaka perfect for balconies, small urban gardens, or as an addition to a larger pond. Do keep in mind that medaka thrive best in groups of at least 6 individuals.Maintenance and careGoldfish produce a relatively large amount of waste, which means you need a good filter system and must change the water regularly. They also tend to stir up mud, which can make the water cloudy. Medaka are much simpler in this respect: they produce minimal waste and do not need a heavy filter installation. A simple sponge filter, or even a well-planted pond without a filter, can already be enough for a group of medaka. As for feeding, both species happily eat high-quality fish food, but medaka have smaller mouths and therefore need finely granulated food. A practical tip: medaka are voracious eaters of mosquito larvae, so you will be bothered less by mosquitoes in summer!Aesthetics and personal preferenceIn the end, the choice often comes down to what you find visually appealing and what fits your lifestyle. Goldfish are statement fish: large, eye-catching and often the highlights of a pond. They swim more calmly and are easy to see, even from a distance. Medaka offer a subtler, more natural beauty. Their small size and lively swimming invite close observation, and on closer inspection their varied colour patterns are breathtaking. For lovers of Japanese gardens or natural ponds, medaka are often the preferred choice, because they create the authentic feel of a rice paddy pond. In addition, medaka make it easier to experiment with different colour varieties without overloading your pond. Both medaka and goldfish are wonderful additions to a pond, but they clearly have different requirements and characteristics. Goldfish are ideal if you have a spacious pond and enjoy large, striking fish that live for many years. Medaka, on the other hand, are ideal for smaller spaces, easier to maintain, and offer a unique, natural charm that fits perfectly with Japanese aesthetics. For many medaka enthusiasts the choice has already been made: these small but fascinating rice fish offer an unmatched combination of beauty, resilience and ease. Whichever fish you choose, make sure your pond is well prepared and that you know your fish's needs. Then you can enjoy your own water paradise for years!
